Some thoughts on discipline & non-negotiables
Happy Saturday, my friends!
Before we jump in, something a little fun.
A bunch of years ago, I had the idea for an app that made barbell math a little easier — because, you know, math. Call me a simpleton, but sometimes I’d rather lift more and math less.
Anyway, I finally built it: Barmath

Okay, let’s get into it.
THE NEXT LEVEL OF DISCIPLINE
Most of us learn discipline the same way.
You decide you’re going to do the thing. No exceptions. No excuses. No matter how you feel, no matter what came before, no matter what the day looked like — you show up and you do it.
That version works. It builds a foundation. It gets you further than you’d get without it.
But there’s a next level that many people never reach.
The highest form of discipline isn’t “at all costs, no matter what.” It’s a small set of absolute non-negotiables — and extreme flexibility for everything above zero.
Here’s what that looks like in practice: you’re not going to skip the workout. That’s the non-negotiable. But how hard you go, how long you stay, what you do when you get there — that’s where grace lives.
You had a brutal day. You barely slept. You’re bruised up and running on empty. So you go anyway, but you move instead of perform. You show up, you warm up, you let your body tell you what it has to give.
That’s not weakness. That’s actually more sophisticated than white-knuckling your way through a max effort session you have no business attempting.
Non-negotiables keep you in the game. Flexibility keeps you sane enough to stay there.

❤️🔥 The Daily Chase
Brief, focused essays delivered each weekday morning to Chase Club members.
Two episodes coming your way next week.
On Monday, Inner Excellence author Jim Murphy joins us to talk about what it means to be selfless so you can be fearless — how mastering the ego, depriving the appetites, and training the heart can unlock the most extraordinary version of your life.
Then on Thursday, we’re answering a question from a Chase Club member whose new coach told her to take a week off — and why the thing you’re actually hiring a coach for is their perspective, not their validation.
Until then, keep on chasing.
