Get It Out of the House
Daily Chase #292
There is no amount of willpower that can outlast a well-stocked pantry.
The food companies have spent trillions of dollars finding the exact ratio of crunch, salt, and sweetness that will make you take one more bite. They are very, very good at their jobs. And what they’ve built is sitting in your kitchen right now.
Here’s an insight that’s simple but uncomfortable: we don’t fail at eating well because we have weak character. We fail because we’ve built an environment that makes failure the default. When the Goldfish crackers are on the counter, you’ll eat the Goldfish. When the frozen pizza is in the freezer, you’ll eat the frozen pizza. Not because you’re bad at this — because you’re human.
The fix isn’t a stricter protocol. The fix is the environment.
Get it out of the house. Get it out of the office. Remove ultra-processed foods from the places where you live and work, and make the inconvenient choice the only available option. If you want ice cream, walk to town and get it. On your birthday, have the cake.
Don’t deprive yourself for the sake of deprivation - just make healthy, intentional choices the easiest kind to make.
You don’t win the nutrition game through discipline. You win it through design.
