🤔 SOME THOUGHTS
The other morning, while ushering my son outside to the bus stop after a snowstorm, I called out, "Careful! It might be slippery." Except, not really. Because somewhere between "slippery" and "this morning," I stepped, slipped on some ice, and slid down the porch steps on my keister.
It was a textbook example of how most of us approach influencing the people in our lives, thinking our words will do all the work. But real influence doesn't come from what we say but from what we do.
The most helpful thing I could have done that morning wasn't to warn my little man about the ice while I trailed behind. It was to go first, to show patience & care (not to mention the purpose of a railing), and not to tell.
This principle extends beyond icy steps, of course.
When we try to influence others' health habits, we often rely on advice-giving: "You should eat more vegetables" or "You need to exercise more." But our actions speak volumes louder than our words.
If Marcus Aurelius were still around (and listening to Chasing Excellence), perhaps he would've said: "Waste no more time arguing about what a healthy man should be. Be one."
Being an example is infinitely more challenging than being an advisor. It demands patience when we want quick results, consistent action when we'd rather just talk, & a deep awareness of our behaviors day after day.
But real influence happens in the quiet moments when others watch us make choices. It's taking the stairs instead of the elevator (check for ice first). It's about getting to the gym instead of sleeping. It's in going to bed early rather than listening to another podcast on the importance of sleep.
The next time you're tempted to give advice, ask yourself: Could I lead by example instead?
Because in the end, people may not hear what you say, but they will always see what you do you fall on your butt.
