Discipline Might Be the Wrong Tool

We’ve been told our whole lives that discipline is the answer.
If you can’t stick to the plan, you lack discipline. If you skip the workout, you lack discipline. If you reach for the donut, you lack discipline.
We’ve been told that discipline is the virtue we should be chasing, the muscle we’re supposed to be building, the thing standing between us and the life we want.
But what if discipline is actually the wrong tool for the job?
In his work, and in our conversation with him, Jay Heinrichs, who’s spent a decade studying ancient rhetoric, makes a case worth considering. He draws a sharp line between discipline and self-persuasion. Discipline, he says, is forcing yourself to do something your daily self doesn’t want to do. Self-persuasion transforms the want itself.
Those two things are completely different.
Disipline is friction. It’s the fight between who you are today and who you want to become. It depletes. It requires maintenance. It fails when the conditions get hard enough.
Self-persuasion is alignment. It’s when the thing that’s good for your soul becomes something you genuinely want - not because you convinced yourself it’s fun, but because you’ve connected it to something deeper than today’s mood.
Aristotle called this connection ethos - your character, your identity, who you actually are when nobody’s testing your willpower.
The goal, then, isn’t to discipline yourself into excellence. The goal is to become someone for whom excellence is the natural expression of who you are.
Discipline gets you through the day. Self-persuasion builds a life.

True. And there’s a catch. To become someone for whom excellence is natural, you first have to take enough repeated action to build that identity. Which requires some source of discipline. You can’t persuade yourself into an identity you haven’t earned through repeated actions yet.
