🤔 SOME THOUGHTS
First, it sounded like construction down the road. Then, quickly, it felt like a train roaring by. Then, within seconds, silence again.
You don't need to have ever experienced an earthquake to know when you feel one. That was me this week when a 4.1 shake visited the Northeast.
Within seconds of things returning to normal, my adrenaline rose, and my heart beat faster.
Everything outside was as it had been a minute before, but everything inside of me was, well, a bit shaken. It took a few deep breaths & a few more minutes to calm down again.
As the day went on, I kept thinking back to the minutes after the quake.
I kept thinking about my physical response, about how aware I was of my adrenaline rising & my heart rate quickening.
I kept thinking about how often the metaphorical ground beneath us shakes, & yet how rarely we are attuned to our response to it - how frequently we are knocked off-center but remain unaware that our stance has shifted.
The difference, of course, is that an earthquake isn't something you experience but don't feel, while the everyday tremors of life are often experienced & rarely noticed.
Every night for the last few months, I've taken a minute to note one instance, big or small, where I'd been knocked off-center — a moment of anxiety or frustration or surprise.
I've found that what knocks me off-center is not so different from a tiny earthquake. These tremors are inevitable & temporary. We can't predict them or prevent them.
But, of course, what we can control is our response.
Once the ground steadies again, instead of manufacturing internal aftershocks — the worry, the stories, the resistance — we can choose to organize ourselves and find our center again.
To do that, we must first learn to be aware of the ground shaking. Only then can we choose to notice when it stops.
