The Recipe for Resilience
Daily Chase #300
Every Monday, we send out a short Daily Chase essay built off an idea we’ve explored inside our most recent episode — a single thought or idea worth starting your day with.
If you’d like to read more of these, you can find them here.
What we do with hard circumstances usually isn’t the problem. The story we tell about them is.
There’s a meaningful difference between pain and suffering.
Pain is the situation — the construction crew outside the window, the child who won’t nap, the six weeks of unnecessary stress you didn’t ask for.
Suffering is what happens when we replay it, give it more mental weight than it deserves, and layer on the narrative about how unfair it is, how it’s ruining everything.
Pain is often unavoidable. Suffering is almost always optional.
The move isn’t to pretend the hard thing isn’t hard. That’s just denial. Instead, accept the situation fully. Recognize: This is real, this is hard, this matters. Then ask: Where does my energy go from here?
That’s the recipe for resilience.
Every ounce spent wishing the situation were different is an ounce we can’t spend making it better. It’s that simple.
The realist doesn’t minimize. The realist says: This is what we’ve got. Now what’s the plan?
Make the plan. Take the action. Save the story.
