The Mental Fitness Check-In
Daily Chase #304
Every Monday, we send out a short Daily Chase essay built off an idea we’ve explored inside our most recent episode — a single thought or idea worth starting your day with.
If you’d like to read more of these, you can find them here.
We track almost everything about our physical health.
Miles run. Weight moved. Sleep scored. Macros counted.
And yet most of us have never done a structured check-in on our mental fitness. We wait until something goes obviously wrong - then scramble.
What if you ran the same kind of diagnostic on your mind that you run on your body?
Not a therapist’s questionnaire. Not a mood-tracking app. Just a handful of honest questions, asked with the same regularity you’d schedule a blood panel.
How quickly do you get angry when the car won’t start? How easy is it for you to apologize? When was the last time you really cried? When was the last time you risked failing? Can you eat a meal, take a walk, or have a conversation without splitting your attention?
These questions don’t produce a number. They produce a direction. And direction is what matters in fitness - physical or mental.
The goal isn’t to have the perfect answer. The goal is to ask the same questions six months from now and compare. Are you responding to low-stakes annoyances better or worse than you were? Are you risking more or hiding more? Are you chasing or drifting?
You can’t trend toward something you’re not measuring. Start measuring.
