Most Mondays, we revisit one of the listener questions we’ve answered in a previous episode. It’s been edited for clarity & brevity.
PATRICK: Here’s a question in our Think bucket:
How do you come back from a bad or demoralizing workout?
BEN: This is going to sound like I'm being coy, but I'm not.
There is no such thing as a bad workout.
Show me the bad or demoralizing workout, and I'll show you judging things you shouldn't be judging.
Is bad or demoralizing because you didn't meet your expectations? Well, eliminate your expectations.
I'm not just throwing that out there.
Why are your expectations where they are? Because you wanted to beat the guy next to you? Because you wanted to see your name at the top of the leaderboard? Because not being the fastest, fittest, or strongest athlete in class throws your whole identity out of whack?
Eliminate all that.
If you want to find your peak performance, eliminate the distractions.
In this case, the distractions are your expectations and your judgments.
There is no such thing as a good or bad workout.
There is no such thing as a demoralizing workout.
I know that sounds esoteric or whatever.
But if you sit with that long enough, you’ll see that I’m right. You’ll start to see that you’re labeling things and that you don’t need to.
