The Nursery Room Test: A Simple Experiment to Discover How Tired You Really Are
I discovered an important lesson about rest when my boys were little.
Sitting in their room around 7, the lights low, the chair rocking gently, the white noise machine humming, my task was ostensibly to get them asleep. The plot twist - known by parents for just about forever - is that half the time, I’d fall asleep first.
What started as a simple task became an experiment in understanding true fatigue.
In that quiet, dark room, separated from my phone, Netflix, & the constant stimulation of daily life, my body told me the truth: I was exhausted.
Now that my boys don’t need me to rock them to sleep anymore, I no longer have a regular reminder that we’ve mastered the dark art of pretending we’re not tired. We prop ourselves up with caffeine, distract ourselves with infinite scrolls, & binge our way through the latest buzz-worthy show.
But in my boy’s room, there was nowhere to hide.
So, let’s call this the Nursery Room Test: Tonight at about 7:30, find a comfortable chair & dim the lights. Silence the phone & leave it in another room. No conversations or distractions. Just sit for 20 minutes.
Your response will tell you everything you need to know about how tired you really are.
If you drift off or feel heavy-eyed within a few minutes, you probably haven’t prioritized sleep like you should. You don’t need to relax or unwind, veg out or decompress.
You need to get to bed.
